INTRO 4 hppa 55.Os 56.Sh NAME 57.Nm intro 58.Nd introduction to special files and hardware support 59.Sh DESCRIPTION 60This section describes the special files, related driver functions, 61and networking support available in the system. 62In this part of the manual, 63the SYNOPSIS section of each configurable device gives a sample specification 64for use in constructing a system description for the 65.Xr config 8 66program. 67The DIAGNOSTICS section lists messages which may appear on the console 68and/or in the system error log 69.Pa /var/log/messages 70due to errors in device operation; see 71.Xr syslogd 8 72for more information. 73.Pp 74This section contains both devices which may be configured into the system 75and network related information. 76The networking support is introduced in 77.Xr netintro 4 . 78.Sh DEVICE SUPPORT 79This section describes the hardware supported on the 80.Tn HP PA-RISC 81platform. 82Software support for these devices comes in two forms. 83A hardware device may be supported with a character or block 84.Em device driver , 85or it may be used within the networking subsystem and have a 86.Em network interface driver . 87Character and block devices are accessed through files in the file 88system of a special type; see 89.Xr mknod 8 . 90Network interfaces are indirectly accessed through the interprocess 91communication facilities provided by the system; see 92.Xr socket 2 . 93.Pp 94A hardware device is identified to the system at configuration time 95and the appropriate device or network interface driver is then compiled 96into the system. 97When the resultant system is booted, the autoconfiguration facilities 98in the system probe for the device and, if found, 99enable the software support for it. 100If a device does not respond at autoconfiguration 101time it is not accessible at any time afterwards. 102To enable a device which did not autoconfigure, the system must be rebooted. 103.Pp 104The autoconfiguration system is described in 105.Xr autoconf 4 . 106.Sh SUPPORTED SYSTEMS 107A list of 108.Tn HP 9000/700 109models targetted for support is listed below, including basic 110system characteristics. 111.Bl -column
