39.Cd "gus* at isapnp?"
40.Cd "audio* at gus?"
41.Sh DESCRIPTION
42The
43.Nm
44driver provides support for the Gravis UltraSound (GUS) and GUS MAX
45audio cards.
46Both cards have on-board memory which is used for seamless playback of samples.
47They can play back 8- or 16-bit samples at up to 44.1kHz.
48They can record 8-bit samples at up to 44.1kHz.
49The UltraSound MAX is a full-duplex sound device, and if configured with two
50DRQ channels can be used for simultaneous playback and recording.
51The I/O port base is jumper-selected, and may be chosen from 0x210-0x260 in
52steps of 0x10.
53(The normal setting is 0x220.)
54The GUS takes 16 ports at its base address and 8 ports at its base address +
550x100.
56.Pp
57The IRQ is software programmed, so you may select any IRQ from the set
58{3,5,7,9,11,12,15}.
59The DRQ lines are software programmed, and may be chosen from {1,3,5,6,7}.
60The
61.Dq drq2
62field in the configuration file line specifies a second DRQ line for recording.
63If there is no drq2 field in the config file, the playback channel will be
64used for recording DMA and only half-duplex mode will be available.
65.Pp
66The Gravis UltraSound MAX has an additional CODEC onboard which is
67addressed with four ports at an offset of 0x10C from the base ports
68(0x31C-0x36C).

78If you wish to use
79.Xr wdc 4
80on the ISAPNP version of the card, and it comes up as DISABLED,
81Gravis has a PNPCFG.EXE program which re-enables it.
82.Sh HISTORY
83The
84.Nm
85device driver appeared in
86.Nx 1.1 .
87.Sh BUGS
88The full-duplex features of the GUS MAX have not been fully tested, and
89full-duplex on the original GUS may not be possible at all.
90.Pp
91Only two voices on the GF1 synthesizer chip are used by this driver (for
92left and right channels).
93.Pp
94Manipulating the mixer while audio samples are playing can lead to
95device driver confusion (and maybe even a system panic).
96.Pp
97Manipulating the mixer device seems to create pregnant system pauses,
98probably due to excessive interrupt masking.
99.Pp
100The joystick and MIDI port interfaces are not supported.
