Each of these contributors 92 gave, not only because they believed that the continuation 93 of 386BSD is vital to the health of the research, 94 educational, and development communities, but also because 95 they realize that an individual can and does make a 96 difference! 97 98 Without the help of the people listed here, this system 99 software release would simply not have been possible. The 100 rest of the 386BSD user community should make special note 101 of all these people and firms and commend them for their 102 generosity and foresight. 103 104 We hope that their leadership and vision will serve as 105 shining examples to the entire 386BSD user community, and 106 serve to encourage others to actively participate in 386BSD. 107 108 _1._2._1. _3_8_6_B_S_D _R_e_l_e_a_s_e _0._2 _a_n_d _1._0 _C_o_n_t_r_i_b_u_t_o_r_s 109 110 David Abercrombie 111 Othman Ahmad 112 Ikuro Aoki 113 Matt Bonner 114 Compaq Computer Corporation 115 Jose Luiz Cordeiro 116 Robert Dienstknecht 117 Dixon Dick 118 Dr. Dobbs Journal 119 Julian Elisher 120 Martin L. This release 390 contained the prior unencumbered 386BSD source code work 391 392 393 338866BBSSDD CCOONNTTRRIIBB LLIISSTT 66 AAuugguusstt 11999944 394 395 396 397 398 399 400 401 402 403 404 done by William Jolitz. The missing kernel software modules 405 (some of them major omissions) and release engineering was 406 also done solely by William Jolitz. See the two-part article 407 _3_8_6_B_S_D: _M_i_s_s_i_n_g _P_i_e_c_e_s, _D_r. _D_o_b_b_s _J_o_u_r_n_a_l, June-July 1992 408 for information on the methodology and construction of this 409 first complete and unencumbered 386BSD systems release (the 410 complete series is available as part of the _3_8_6_B_S_D _R_e_f_e_r_e_n_c_e 411 _C_D). 412 413 Since that first release, many people have developed or 414 enhanced new software programs and modules and conducted 415 ports of popular public domain user programs featured as 416 part of this release. While some of this software was 417 directly contributed to us, most items were made available 418 to all users via the Internet and been incorporated into 419 many personal variants of 386BSD. Occasionally, several 420 people came up with a variety of approaches for a single 421 item. In this instance, we tried to choose the one which we 422 felt would best serve the rest of the 386BSD user base for 423 this release. However, the creativity and perseverance of 424 all the software contributors trying to make 386BSD better 425 for the entire 386BSD user community was considerable. Each 426 individual effort is worthy of pride. 386BSD Release 0.1 427 was an attempt to consolidate and set a baseline for these 428 changes. It consisted of a fully fleshed out stable system 429 based on the older Release 0.0 technology contained in the 430 NET/2 release, coupled with the many popular publically 431 available applications and development packages used in many 432 Unix systems. 433 434 Release 1.0, in contrast, begins a reexamination of 435 this older technology and incorporates some of the new ideas 436 and paradigm shifts contemplated in BSD operating system 437 design ever since this project began in 1989 -- some of 438 which have been discussed since the early 1980's. It is 439 humbling to realize that after five years of work, 386BSD is 440 only now becoming the experimental platform for new ideas 441 that was intended, and that there is still much new work to 442 do. As such, while scanning the source files contained 443 within this release, we ask that you make a special note of 444 the many people who have created new work over the years, 445 for these are the people to watch in the next five to ten 446 years. 447 448 We wish to personally thank all of these people, as 449 they have helped speed 386BSD releases back to the 450 contributor and all other users of 386BSD. We hope that 451 these contributors and all the rest of the 386BSD user 452 community will continue this cycle of new work, 453 incorporation, testing, and release, in order to make future 454 releases even better! 455 456 457 458 459 338866BBSSDD CCOONNTTRRIIBB LLIISSTT 77 AAuugguusstt 11999944 460 461 462 463
