1FMT(1) 386BSD Reference Manual FMT(1) 2 3NNAAMMEE 4 ffmmtt - simple text formatter 5 6SSYYNNOOPPSSIISS 7 ffmmtt [_g_o_a_l [_m_a_x_i_m_u_m]] [name ...] 8 9DDEESSCCRRIIPPTTIIOONN 10 FFmmtt is a simple text formatter which reads the concatenation of input 11 files (or standard input if none are given) and produces on standard 12 output a version of its input with lines as close to the _g_o_a_l length as 13 possible without exceeding the maximum. The _g_o_a_l length defaults to 65 14 and the maximum to 75. The spacing at the beginning of the input lines 15 is preserved in the output, as are blank lines and interword spacing. 16 17 FFmmtt is meant to format mail messages prior to sending, but may also be 18 useful for other simple tasks.
