191 What is Umix ?
20
21Umix is an advanced program for adjusting soundcard mixers
22in Linux and other Unices. You can control your volumes,
23balances and recording sources flexibly from the command
24line, or with a fullscreen user interface. Umix currently
25supports only Linux and OSS, but support for other unices
26and mixer drivers should be easy to implement, because it
27is designed with modularity in mind. All mixer drivers and
28UIs are loaded dynamically at runtime. I designed it as
29an replacement for AUmix.
30
311.1 How to use Umix ?
32
33Read the man-page.
34
351.2 What does Umix mean ?
36
37Nothing particular. Ultimate Mixer ? Unix Mixer ? Something
38like that. Yes, I know it's a dull name.
39
401.3 Why another volume mixer ?
41
42I got frustrated with Aumix, and there were no other good
43alternatives that had terminal/ncurses user interfaces.
44I myself like to do all my work in a console, and at the
45same time I usually listen to mp3/nsf music, and need to
46adjust my soundcard volumes constantly. Aumix acts weird,
47eats too much CPU cycles etc. If you want to modify it in
48any sensible way, total rewrite would be the only way.
