README

1Crimson Fields is a tactical war game in the tradition of Battle Isle.
2
3The outcome of the war lies in your hands. You decide which units are
4sent to the front lines, and when to unleash the reserves. Your mission
5objectives range from defending strategically vital locations to simply
6destroying all enemy forces in the area. Protect supply convoys or raid
7enemy facilities to uncover technological secrets or fill your storage
8bays so you can repair damaged units or build new ones in your own
9factories. Lead your troops to victory!
10
11Tools are available to create custom maps and campaigns. You can also play
12the original Battle Isle maps if you have a copy of the game.
13
14You can pit yourself against another human player either in hot-seat mode
15in front of the same machine, over a network, or via e-mail, or against
16the computer.
17
18Crimson Fields is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public
19License (GPL). It has been developed and tested on Intel architecture
20with Linux, but it shouldn't be too hard to make it compile and run on
21other operating systems as well. It works with Linux, various flavours
22of BSD, Sun Solaris, MacOS X, BeOS, and MS Windows, among others.
23
24For installation instructions and system requirements see the INSTALL file.

README.CoMET

1CoMET is the Crimson Fields Map Editing Tool. Please keep in mind that
2this is still a work in progress (and much more so than the game itself).
3Currently, the editor is considered to be in alpha state.
4
5Most basic features are implemented. You can, for example, create new
6maps, load, edit and save them, so it can already be a great help when
7designing missions. One of the major limitations is that you can only
8create single-line messages in plain ASCII. As a result, CoMET is for
9now only really useful when used together with cfed, which it will
10eventually replace. You can do the map layout with CoMET, export the
11result as a text file, and add the missing bits by hand (see the cfed
12documentation for details on how to do this).
13
14CoMET can read the binary level files created with cfed, and you can make
15modifications to them. Even settings not yet supported by CoMET should
16remain intact during this procedure.

README.bi2cf

1bi2cf is a map conversion tool for Crimson Fields. It takes the data files
2of a map from Battle Isle, Battle Isle Data Disk 1 or 2, or History Line
31914-1918 and converts them into map sources suitable for the cfed map
4compiler for Crimson Fields.
5
6Unfortunately, we didn't get permission to distribute the original maps or
7the modified versions, so you need a copy of one of those games to make use
8of this program. You can, of course, also convert custom maps which have
9been created using one of the map editors available for Battle Isle.
10
11See the bi2cf(6) man page for usage information.
12
13bi2cf was written by Florian Dietrich <n8flo@yahoo.de> and is distributed
14under the GNU General Public License (GPL).
