SYNOPSIS 40.Cd "device ti" 41.Sh DESCRIPTION 42The 43.Nm 44driver provides support for PCI gigabit ethernet adapters based on 45the Alteon Networks Tigon gigabit ethernet controller chip. 46The Tigon 47contains an embedded R4000 CPU, gigabit MAC, dual DMA channels and 48a PCI interface unit. 49The Tigon II contains two R4000 CPUs and other 50refinements. 51Either chip can be used in either a 32-bit or 64-bit PCI 52slot. 53Communication with the chip is achieved via PCI shared memory 54and bus master DMA. 55The Tigon I and II support hardware multicast 56address filtering, VLAN tag extraction and insertion, and jumbo 57ethernet frames sizes up to 9000 bytes. 58Note that the Tigon I chipset 59is no longer in active production: all new adapters should come equipped 60with Tigon II chipsets. 61.Pp 62There are several PCI boards available from both Alteon and other 63vendors that use the Tigon chipset under OEM contract. 64The 65.Nm 66driver has been tested with the following Tigon-based adapters: 67.Pp 68.Bl -bullet -compact -offset indent 69.It 70The Alteon AceNIC V gigabit ethernet adapter (1000baseSX) 71.It 72The Alteon AceNIC V gigabit ethernet adapter (1000baseT) 73.It 74The 3Com 3c985-SX gigabit ethernet adapter (Tigon 1) 75.It 76The 3Com 3c985B-SX gigabit ethernet adapter (Tigon 2) 77.It 78The Netgear GA620 gigabit ethernet adapter (1000baseSX) 79.It 80The Netgear GA620T gigabit ethernet adapter (1000baseT) 81.El 82.Pp 83The following should also be supported but have not yet been tested: 84.Pp 85.Bl -bullet -compact -offset indent 86.It 87The Digital EtherWORKS 1000SX PCI Gigabit Adapter 88.It 89Silicon Graphics PCI gigabit ethernet adapter 90.It 91Farallon PN9000SX Gigabit Ethernet adapter 92.El 93.Pp 94While the Tigon chipset supports 10, 100 and 1000Mbps speeds, support for 9510 and 100Mbps speeds is only available on boards with the proper 96transceivers. 97Most adapters are only designed to work at 1000Mbps, 98however the driver should support those NICs that work at lower speeds 99as well. 100.Pp 101Support for jumbo frames is provided via the interface MTU setting. 102Selecting an MTU larger than 1500 bytes with the 103.Xr ifconfig 8 104utility configures the adapter to receive and transmit jumbo frames. 105Using jumbo frames can greatly improve performance for certain tasks, 106such as file transfers and data streaming. 107.Pp 108Support for vlans is also available using the 109.Xr vlan 4 110mechanism. 111See the 112.Xr vlan 4 113man page for more details. 114.Pp 115The 116.Nm 117driver supports the following media types: 118.Bl -tag -width xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 119.It autoselect 120Enable autoselection of the media type and options. 121The user can manually override 122the autoselected mode by adding media options to the 123.Pa /etc/rc.conf 124file. 125.It 10baseT/UTP 126Set 10Mbps operation. 127The 128.Ar mediaopt 129option can also be used to select either 130.Ar full-duplex 131or 132.Ar half-duplex 133modes. 134.It 100baseTX 135Set 100Mbps (fast ethernet) operation. 136The 137.Ar mediaopt 138option can also be used to select either 139.Ar full-duplex 140or 141.Ar half-duplex 142modes. 143.It 1000baseSX 144Set 1000Mbps (gigabit ethernet) operation. 145Only full 146.Ar full-duplex 147mode is supported at this speed. 148.El 149.Pp 150The 151.Nm 152driver supports the following media options: 153.Bl -tag -width xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 154.It full-duplex 155Force full duplex operation 156.It half-duplex 157Force half duplex operation. 158.El 159.Pp 160For more information on configuring this device, see 161.Xr ifconfig 8 . 162.Sh DIAGNOSTICS 163.Bl -diag 164.It "ti%d: couldn't map memory" 165A fatal initialization error has occurred. 166.It "ti%d: couldn't map interrupt" 167A fatal initialization error has occurred. 168.It "ti%d: no memory for softc struct!" 169The driver failed to allocate memory for per-device instance information 170during initialization. 171.It "ti%d: failed to enable memory mapping!" 172The driver failed to initialize PCI shared memory mapping. 173This might 174happen if the card is not in a bus-master slot. 175.It "ti%d: no memory for jumbo buffers!" 176The driver failed to allocate memory for jumbo frames during 177initialization. 178.It "ti%d: bios thinks we're in a 64 bit slot, but we aren't" 179The BIOS has programmed the NIC as though it had been installed in 180a 64-bit PCI slot, but in fact the NIC is in a 32-bit slot. 181This happens 182as a result of a bug in some BIOSes. 183This can be worked around on the 184Tigon II, but on the Tigon I initialization will fail. 185.It "ti%d: board self-diagnostics failed!" 186The ROMFAIL bit in the CPU state register was set after system 187startup, indicating that the on-board NIC diagnostics failed. 188.It "ti%d: unknown hwrev" 189The driver detected a board with an unsupported hardware revision. 190The 191.Nm 192driver supports revision 4 (Tigon 1) and revision 6 (Tigon 2) chips 193and has firmware only for those devices. 194.It "ti%d: watchdog timeout" 195The device has stopped responding to the network, or there is a problem with 196the network connection (cable). 197.El 198.Sh SEE ALSO 199.Xr arp 4 , 200.Xr ifmedia 4 , 201.Xr netintro 4 , 202.Xr ng_ether 4 , 203.Xr vlan 4 , 204.Xr ifconfig 8 205.Rs 206.%T Alteon Gigabit
