This file is normally unreadable, and so may contain 45privileged information. The format of the file is a series of lines 46of the form: <system-name>[\ \et]*<phone-number>. The system name is 47one of those defined in the 48.Xr remote 5 49file and the phone number is constructed from any sequence of 50characters terminated only by ``,'' or the end of the line. 51The ``='' and ``*'' characters are 52indicators to the auto call units to pause and wait for a second dial 53tone (when going through an exchange). The ``='' is required by the 54.Tn DF02-AC 55and the ``*'' is required by the 56.Tn BIZCOMP 571030. 58.Pp 59Only one phone number per line is permitted. However, if more than 60one line in the file contains the same system name 61.Xr tip 1 62will attempt to dial each one in turn, until it establishes a connection. 63.Sh FILES 64.Bl -tag -width /etc/phones -compact 65.It Pa /etc/phones 66.El 67.Sh SEE ALSO 68.Xr tip 1 , 69.Xr remote 5 70.Sh HISTORY 71The 72.Nm 73file appeared in 74.Bx 4.2 . 75
