34.Sh DESCRIPTION
35The file
36.Pa /etc/phones
37contains the system-wide
38private phone numbers for the
39.Xr tip 1
40program.
41This file is normally unreadable, and so may contain
42privileged information.
43The format of the file is a series of lines
44of the form: <system-name>[\ \et]*<phone-number>.
45The system name is
46one of those defined in the
47.Xr remote 5
48file and the phone number is constructed from any sequence of
49characters terminated only by ``,'' or the end of the line.
50The ``='' and ``*'' characters are
51indicators to the auto call units to pause and wait for a second dial
52tone (when going through an exchange).
53The ``='' is required by the
54.Tn DF02-AC
55and the ``*'' is required by the
56.Tn BIZCOMP
571030.
58.Pp
59Only one phone number per line is permitted.
60However, if more than
61one line in the file contains the same system name
62.Xr tip 1
63will attempt to dial each one in turn, until it establishes a connection.
