38.Sh NAME
39.Nm rpc.lockd
40.Nd NFS file locking daemon
41.Sh SYNOPSIS
42.Nm rpc.lockd
43.Op Fl d Op Ar debug_level
44.Sh DESCRIPTION
45.Nm rpc.lockd
46is a daemon which provides file- and record-locking services in an NFS
47environment.
48.Pp
49Options and operands available for
50.Nm rpc.lockd :
51.Bl -tag -width Ds
52.It Fl d
53The
54.Fl d
55option causes debugging information to be written to syslog, recording
56all RPC transations to the daemon. These messages are logged with level
57LOG_DEBUG and facility LOG_DAEMON. If debug_level is not specified,
58level 1 is assumed, giving one log line per protocol operation. Higher
59debug levels can be specified, causing display of operation arguments
60and internal operations of the daemon.
61.El
62.Pp
63Error conditions are logged to syslog, irrespecive of the debug level,
64using log level LOG_ERR and facility LOG_DAEMON.
65.Pp
66The
67.Nm rpc.lockd
68daemon must NOT be invoked by
69.Xr inetd 8
70because the protocol assumes that the daemon will run from system start time.
71Instead, it should be run from
72.Xr rc 8
73after the network has been started.

83.Sh BUGS
84The current implementation provides only the server side of the protocol
85(ie. clients running other OS types can establish locks on a FreeBSD fileserver,
86but there is currently no means for a FreeBSD client to establish locks).
87.Pp
88Versions 1, 2 and 3 of the protocol are supported. However, only versions
892 (Unix systems) and 3 (PC-NFS clients) seem to be in common use - the version
901 support has not been tested due to the lack of version 1 clients against
91which to test.
92.Sh STANDARDS
93The implementation is based on the specification in X/Open CAE Specification
