39.Nd ESS Technology AudioDrive family audio device driver

42.Cd "ess* at pnpbios? index ?"
43.Cd "ess* at ofisa?"
44.Cd "audio* at ess?"
45.Cd "opl* at ess?"
46.Sh DESCRIPTION
47The
48.Nm
49driver provides support for the ESS 1788, 1888, 1887, and 888 AudioDrive
50audio devices.
51.Pp
52The AudioDrive 1788 is a half-duplex device, while the 1888, 1887, and
53888 are full-duplex. All are capable of 8- and 16-bit audio sample
54recording and playback at rates up to 44.1kHz.
55.Pp
56The AudioDrive takes 16 I/O ports. The I/O port range, IRQ, and DRQ
57channels are set by the driver to the values specified in the
58configuration file (or for isapnp, pnpbios, or ofisa, the values
59assigned from the firmware).
60The I/O port base must be one of 0x220, 0x230, 0x240,
610x250. The IRQ must be one of 5, 7, 9, 10 (or 15 on the 1887
62only). The first DRQ channel must be selected from 0, 1, 3. The second
63DRQ channel (used for playback by the full-duplex 1888/1887, ignored
64by the 1788) can additionally be set to 5. If both DRQ channels are
65used they must be different.
66.Pp
67The joystick interface (if enabled) is handled by the
68.Xr joy 4
69driver.

77.Sh HISTORY
78The
79.Nm
80device driver appeared in
81.Nx 1.4 .
82.Sh BUGS
83The AudioDrive devices have a SoundBlaster compatibility mode, and may
84be detected by the SoundBlaster driver (see
85.Xr sb 4 )
86rather than the AudioDrive driver. The workaround is to remove the
87SoundBlaster driver from the kernel configuration.
