A hardware 66device may be supported with a character or block 67.Em device driver , 68or it may be used within the networking subsystem and have a 69.Em network interface driver . 70Block and character devices are accessed through files in the file 71system of a special type; see 72.Xr mknod 8 . 73Network interfaces are indirectly accessed through the interprocess 74communication facilities provided by the system; see 75.Xr socket 2 . 76.Pp 77A hardware device is identified to the system at configuration time 78and the appropriate device or network interface driver is then compiled 79into the system. When the resultant system is booted, the 80autoconfiguration facilities in the system probe for the device 81and, if found, enable the software support for it. 82If a device does not respond at autoconfiguration 83time it is not accessible at any time afterwards. 84To enable a device which did not autoconfigure, 85the system will have to be rebooted. 86.Pp 87The autoconfiguration system is described in 88.Xr autoconf 4 . 89A list of the supported devices is given below. 90.Sh SEE ALSO 91.Xr config 1 , 92.Xr autoconf 4 , 93.Xr awacs 4 , 94.Xr bm 4 , 95.Xr gem 4 , 96.Xr mc 4 , 97.Xr tlp 4 98.Sh HISTORY 99The 100.Tn macppc 101.Nm intro 102man page first appeared in 103.Nx 1.5.1 , 104based on the 105.Nx Ns /mac68k 106.Xr intro 4 . 107.Sh LIST OF DEVICES 108The devices listed below are supported in this incarnation of 109the system. 110Devices are indicated by their functional interface. 111Not all supported devices are listed. 112.Pp 113PCMCIA devices are supported through the 114.Xr pcmcia 4 115bus and associated devices. 116.Pp 117Cardbus devices are supported through the 118.Xr cardbus 4 119bus and associated devices. 120.Pp 121USB devices are supported through the 122.Xr usb 4 123bus and associated devices. 124.Pp 125Additionally, the following specific devices are supported: 126.Bl -tag -width "xxxxxxxx" -compact -offset indent 127.It Em adb 128Apple Desktop Bus event interface. 129.It Em awacs 130Audio Waveform Amplifier and Converter \(em Apple Sound Chip 131(supported systems include 603 and 604 based 132machines, and 133.Tn Open Firmware 3 134based machines). 135.It Em bm 136BMac Ethernet. 137.It Em de 138DECchip 21x4x based Ethernet cards (see also 139.Xr tlp 4 ) . 140.It Em esp 141.Tn NCR 14253C9x built-in SCSI interface. 143.It Em gm 144GMac Ethernet. 145.It Em kmem 146kernel virtual memory. 147.It Em mc 148MACE Ethernet. 149.It Em mem 150physical memory. 151.It Em mesh 152MESH built-in SCSI interface (most Old World machines up to the 1999 153series of G3 PowerBooks). 154.It Em nvram 155NVRAM access. 156.It Em ofb 157PCI based frame buffer with 158.Tn Open Firmware 159support. 160.It Em openfirm 161.Tn Open Firmware 162access. 163.It Em tlp 164DECchip 21x4x based Ethernet cards. 165.It Em wdc 166Standard on-board IDE controller. 167.It Em zsc 168.Tn Zilog 169Z8530 built-in serial interface. 170.El 171
