A hardware 73device may be supported with a character or block 74.Em device driver , 75or it may be used within the networking subsystem and have a 76.Em network interface driver . 77Block and character devices are accessed through files in the file 78system of a special type; see 79.Xr mknod 8 . 80Network interfaces are indirectly accessed through the interprocess 81communication facilities provided by the system; see 82.Xr socket 2 . 83.Pp 84A hardware device is identified to the system at configuration time 85and the appropriate device or network interface driver is then compiled 86into the system. When the resultant system is booted, the 87autoconfiguration facilities in the system probe for the device 88and, if found, enable the software support for it. 89If a device does not respond at autoconfiguration 90time it is not accessible at any time afterwards. 91To enable a device which did not autoconfigure, 92the system will have to be rebooted. 93.Pp 94The autoconfiguration system is described in 95.Xr autoconf 4 . 96A list of the supported devices is given below. 97.Sh SEE ALSO 98.Xr autoconf 4 , 99.Xr intio 4 , 100.Xr mfp 4 , 101.Xr neptune 4 , 102.Xr vs 4 , 103.Xr config 8 104.Sh LIST OF DEVICES 105The devices listed below are supported in this incarnation of 106the system. 107Devices are indicated by their functional interface. 108Not all supported devices are listed. 109.Bl -tag -width "okiadpcm" -compact -offset indent 110.It Em intio 111Internal I/O virtual device 112.It Em mfp 113MC68901 MFP (Multi-Function Peripheral) 114.It Em spc 115Sharp genuine MB89352 SCSI host adaptor 116.It Em mha 117MK-HA1 Mankai-Seisakusho Mach-2 SCSI host adaptor 118.It Em neptune 119Neptune-X Ethernet interface 120.It Em fdc 121Built-in floppy disk controller device 122.It Em fd 123Floppy disk device 124.It Em grf 125Built-in frame buffer 126.It Em kmem 127kernel virtual memory 128.It Em ite 129x68k Internal Terminal Emulator 130.It Em mem 131physical memory 132.It Em par 133Centronics printer interface 134.It Em com 135NS16450 serial interface 136.It Em zs 137Z8530 built-in serial interface 138.It Em kbd 139x68k Keyboard device 140.It Em ms 141x68k mouse / trackball 142.It Em bell 143The keyboard bell emulator 144.It Em pow 145The power switch 146.It Em vs 147MSM6258V built-in voice synthesizer 148.El 149.Sh HISTORY 150The 151.Tn x68k 152.Nm intro 153man page first appeared in 154.Nx 1.3 . 155
