MAN 1 ""
C 4
NAME
man - display the on-line manual pages
SYNOPSIS
man [-acw] [-M path] [-m path] [section] title ...
DESCRIPTION
Man displays the UNIX manual pages.

The options are as follows:

a Display all of the manual pages for a specified title . (Normally, only the first manual page found is displayed.)

c Copy the manual page to the standard output instead of using more (1) to paginate it. This is done by default if the standard output is not a terminal device.

M Override the list of standard directories where man searches for manual pages. The supplied path must be a colon (``:'') separated list of directories. This search path may also be set using the environmental variable MANPATH .

m Augment the list of standard directories where man searches for manual pages. The supplied path must be a colon (``:'') separated list of directories. These directories will be searched before the standard directories or the directories supplied with the M option or the MANPATH environmental variable are searched.

w List the locations of the manual pages that man would display for the specified title .

Section numbers restrict the portions of the manual that man will search to a single section. The section number should be a number, ``1'' through ``8'', or ``3f'' to specify the FORTRAN versions of section 3 of the manual. If no section number is given, man will search the sections in the following order: ``1'', ``8'', ``6'', ``2'', ``3'', ``4'', ``5'', ``7'' and ``3f''. This is to give precedence to commands over library subroutines.

"ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLES"

MACHINE As some manual pages are intended only for use on certain architectures, man only searches the directories applicable to the current machine. Man's determination of the current machine type may be overridden by setting the environmental variable MACHINE to the name of an architecture. Currently supported architectures are ``tahoe'' and ``vax''. Machine specific areas are checked before general areas.

MANPATH The standard search path used by man may be overridden by specifying a path in the MANPATH environmental variable. The format of the path is a colon (``:'') separated list of directories.

PAGER Any value of the environmental variable PAGER will be used instead of the standard pagination program more (1).

BUGS
The on-line manual pages are, by necessity, forgiving toward stupid display devices, causing some manual pages to not be as good as their typeset counterparts.
