README

1This is min12xxw, a filter to convert pbmraw data such as produced by
2ghostscript to the printer language of Minolta 1[234]xx W printers.
3
4It is based on an initial driver by Adam Bocim <beetman@seznam.cz>.
5Support for the newer 13xxW and 1400W models is not tested by me because
6I do not have such a printer. However, I have had reports confirming that
7it also works increasingly well.
8
9Building and installing:
10
11This should be as simple as
12
13	./configure
14	make
15	make install
16	make clean
17
18Binaries go to /usr/local/bin, manpages to /usr/local/man. This can be
19changed with options to configure (see INSTALL and/or ./configure --help).
20
21
22Comments:
23
24I do not add comments about how to integrate this driver into your printing
25system. I am sure there are a lot of people who can do this a lot better
26than I can (this is because I use somewhat antiquated software). If you
27think you can, put it onto the net or send me a copy for inclusion. I am
28not going to support this actively, because I haven't got the time or
29energy to do so. Maintaining the filter might prove enough work.
30
31However, the people at www.linuxprinting.org have produced .ppd files for
32this driver, so making this beast work should be quite easy for all recent
33Linux distributions.
34
35For usage instructions, see the manpage. In case of problems, please have a
36look at the FAQ which should answer some of the most frequently asked
37questions. License is in the file COPYING (it is GPL - stay relaxed...). If
38you want to understand the format in which data is sent to the printer, see
39the file format.txt and the sources.
40
41The build process builds an additional program, esc-m, which is also installed.
42Its main purpose was to ease viewing the output of the windoof driver during
43developent. It is still included because it might help to find problems.
44Also, if you can read the output for another printer with this tool and the
45output makes at least some sense, this might mean that the printer can be
46driven by this filter. I noticed support for PagePro 13xxW would be possible
47using this approach.
48
49I've had reports by people using min12xxw on at least the following machines
50and under the following operating systems:
51
52	- Linux (x86, amd64, ppc)
53	- FreeBSD (x86, amd64)
54	- OS X (ppc)
55	- NetBSD (sparc64)
56	- Solaris (sparc64)
57
58This list is probably not complete, and the order in which the items are
59mentioned does not mean that the author prefers a certain platfrom or
60operating system. If you use min12xxw on a platform that is not listed
61here, please drop me an e-mail so I can include the information here.
62
63
64Thanks:
65
66I'd also like to give thanks to a few other people:
67
68Initial suggestions for reading some information from the printer came
69from Bruno Schdlbauer <bruno.schoedlbauer@gmx.de>, who also pointed me
70to a nice USB sniffer by Benot Papillault for Windoof 98 and up, see
71http://benoit.papillault.free.fr/usbsnoop. (This little program may prove
72very helpful on similar occasions. Happy USB sniffing...)
73
74David Hamilton <dhamilto@angel.homeip.net> has helped a lot in testing and
75developing the support for the PagePro 1350W. His patience when testing
76things out was enormous. He really deserves a big THANKS.
77
78Krishnaprasad encouraged me to support the PagePro 1400W and helped testing
79the new code.
80
81
82Happy printing!

1The following message was sent to www.linuxprinting.org Minolta forum
2by Marc Cerisier. He describes the steps he needed to perform on his
3system to get hin Minolta PagePro 1350W to work. Because I haven't got
4MacOS X on any computer, I can't test it and give instructions on how
5to get things going, Marc has kindly given me permission to include his
6post here, so others can use it as a starting point. The steps you may
7have to perform need not neccessarily match his' in all details, but the
8general outline should be similar.
9Anyway, I hope this bit of information is helpful...

19Subject: [lp.minolta] Instructions for installing a PagePro 1350W on Mac OS X
20
21These instructions are the fruit of my own struggle to install this printer on
22my mother's Mini Mac. Hope they help.	I sure wish these were available before
23I started.

27
28To install a Minolta PagePro 1350W on Mac OS 10.3.8:
29
301) PREPARE THE DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT
31
32If you've never installed the development tools (Xcode), install them as you
33will need the compiler(gcc). The version of autoconf and automake are not
34current enough for the min12xxw driver, though, so you need to compile new
35versions of those packages. Here are the links:
36
37www.gnu.org/software/autoconf/
38www.gnu.org/software/automake/
39
40You need to build the new autoconf before automake.
41
42The build process is similar for both, and will also be the same for min12xxw:
43
44tar zxf <downloaded file>
45cd <new directory>
46/configure
47make
48make install
49
50In both instances, the new files are installed into /usr/local/bin/, which
51isn't in the path by default, so first, add it to the path
52(PATH="$PATH:/usr/local/bin"), and then rename all of the files in /usr/bin/
53that have new versions in /usr/local/bin/. As soon as you type 'make install',
54you will see which files were created by that build, and those are the ones
55that need to be renamed. If you don't rename them(or delete them), the build
56process for minn12xxw will see the old versions before the new ones of the same
57name since /usr/bin/ occurs before /usr/local/bin/ in the path.
58
592) BUILD MIN12XXW
60
61Get the driver here:
62
63http://www.hinterbergen.de/mala/min12xxw/
64
65Using the build process outlined in the above step, this should happen without
66flaw. The driver will be installed to /usr/local/bin/.
67
68You also need to get the PPD file for the printer. Do so here:
69
70http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_driver.cgi?driver=min12xxw
71
72Place the PPD in this folder:
73
74/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj
75
763) INSTALL PRINTER
77
78First, restart the CUPS system with this command - 'killall -HUP cupsd'. Next
79open the Printer Setup Utility (in /Applications/Utilities). Since the os
80cannot directly recognize the driver, you have add the printer with the
81advanced option. Do this by holding down the option key, and clicking Add in
82the Printer Setup Utility. When the new widow opens, select Advanced from the
83very first popup menu (the one that selects the connection method). In the
84Device popup menu, look for your printer--should be at the bottom of the menu.
85When you select your printer (mine was called PP1350W), the Device Name &
86Device URI fields are filled in for you. On the Printer Model popup menu,
87select Minolta, and when you do so, the PPD you installed should appear below.
88Be sure it's selected, and click add.
89
90Your printer should now work! By substituting another PPD, these instructions
91should work for the other printers that use this driver.
