1$Id: README,v 1.10 2000/09/21 03:16:53 knight Exp $ 2 3Cons is a Perl-based make replacement. It is not compatible with make, 4but has a number of powerful capabilities not found in other software 5construction systems, including make. 6 7This package contains a development release of Cons and its documentation. 8Development releases are intended for advanced features and quick delivery 9of bug fixes. If you are looking for the latest stable release, look 10for an even-digit minor version number (2.0.x, 2.2.x, etc.). 11 12A related package (cons-test) contains a portable test suite for Cons, 13plus a wrapper script and supporting modules for executing the tests. 14You do not need this other package to use Cons. 15 16You will need Perl 5.002 or better and the Perl Digest::MD5 module, 17available from CPAN. 18 19Cons is known to work on a variety of platforms: it's in production 20use on versions of FreeBSD, Linux, SunOS, Solaris, HPUX, AIX, IRIX and 21Windows NT. 22 23Documentation is supplied in POD format (thanks to Ulrich Pfeifer). 24 25A cons discussion group, cons-discuss@gnu.org, has been created. If 26you wish to subscribe, send mail to cons-discuss-request@gnu.org with 27the word "subscribe" in the BODY of the message. Please send all comments, 28requests, complaints, etc. to the mailing list. 29 30Cons is maintained by members of the cons-discuss mailing list. 31 32The official cons web site is http://www.dsmit.com/cons 33 34An article about Cons appeared in The Perl Journal, issue #9, Spring 1998. 35
