1@The Backbuffer 2$The Backbuffer 3 4In KevEdit, the backbuffer is a valuable 5tool for storing tiles, as well as 6customized gradients. 7 8!quick;Quick Keys 9!resize;Resizing the Backbuffer 10!lock;Backbuffer Locking 11!acquire;Acquire Mode 12!draw;Draw Mode 13!gradient;Gradient Draw Mode 14 15:quick;Quick Keys 16 17To quickly access a position in the 18pattern selector, the numbers 0-9 can be 19used. Pressing 0 will select the Empty 20pattern, which you will probably need 21frequently. Pressing one of 1-9 will 22select a slot in the backbuffer. 23 24:resize;Resizing the Backbuffer 25 26The backbuffer may be resized using 27the '<' and '>' keys. Some gradients may 28not fit in the default ten-tile 29backbuffer, so this will prove useful. 30Only ten tiles will be visible at once, 31but the backbuffer will scroll 32automatically. 33 34The Gradient Tool, Gradient Draw Mode, and 35Random Fill all use the ENTIRE backbuffer, 36so feel free to resize the backbuffer as 37necessary using '<' and '>'. 38 39:lock;Backbuffer Locking 40 41By default, using ENTER to modify a tile, 42plotting an uncommon tile from the F1 - F3 43menus, or pressing INSERT will copy a tile 44into the backbuffer. Backbuffer locking 45prevents the backbuffer from being 46modified, except that when INSERT is 47pressed, the tile under the cursor will be 48inserted into the currently selected 49backbuffer slot, if the pattern selector 50is over the backbuffer. This mimics ZZTAE 51behavior. 52 53To toggle backbuffer locking, press '/'. 54 55:acquire;Acquire Mode 56 57Acquire mode lifts tiles into the 58backbuffer as the cursor is moved. By 59using acquire mode, one can load a large 60gradient or line of objects into the 61backbuffer with relatively few keystrokes. 62Press 'a' to toggle acquire mode. The 'a' 63next to the backbuffer will indicate 64whether acquire mode is on or off. 65 66By default, the backbuffer will be resized 67so that no non-empty tiles are lost. To 68force the backbuffer to stay the same 69size, use SHIFT+'A'. 70 71Holding down ALT while moving the cursor 72will acquire several tiles at once. 73 74:draw;Draw Mode 75 76This drawing tool should be familiar from 77the original ZZT editor. Simply press TAB 78and the currently selected pattern will be 79plotted everywhere the cursor goes. Press 80TAB again to exit Draw Mode. 81 82:gradient;Gradient Draw Mode 83 84Gradient Draw Mode works much in the same 85way as Draw Mode, except that KevEdit 86cycles through the backbuffer with each 87cursor movement. This can be used to 88easily plot gradients or other patterns. 89 90Use SHIFT-TAB to activate gradient mode 91and TAB to turn it off. When gradient mode 92is on, KevEdit will cycle through the 93backbuffer backward so that tiles are laid 94down in the same order they enter the 95buffer. To cycle forward, press SHIFT-TAB 96a second time. 97 98Holding down ALT while moving will 99continuously paint the gradient for ten 100spaces at a time horizontally and five 101tiles at a time vertically. 102 103If the one of the standard patterns is 104selected, a fade from foreground color to 105background color will be used instead of 106the backbuffer. 107
