INTRODUCTION 23 24Thank you for downloading this English edition of Narcissu Side 2nd! 25 26 27 2. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS 28 29Narcissu Side 2nd should work on any more-or-less-POSIX-compliant 30platform that is capable of using SDL. 31 32Ponscripter has been tested on i386, x86-64, and PowerPC 33architectures, those being the ones I have access to. The code should 34be reasonably portable, but YMMV on esoteric hardware. 35 36This package is known to run successfully on current versions of 37several popular GNU/Linux distributions (including Ubuntu, Fedora, and 38OpenSuSE), several BSDs (Free, Open, and Net), and on Solaris 10. 39 40 41 3. INSTALLING THE GAME 42 43This is a no-frills distribution designed to be usable in generic 44Unix-type environments. As such, installation is a bit more involved 45than for packages targeting a specific single operating system. 46 47Please see INSTALL for full details. 48 49 50 4. PLAYING THE GAME 51 52 4.1 TRANSLATIONS 53 54The first Narcissu game experimentally came in both voiced and 55unvoiced versions. When we localised it, we followed the experimental 56spirit and provided multiple translations. We continue that tradition 57in the sequel. 58 59Each translation may additionally be played voiced or unvoiced. They 60are all different presentations of the same games -- finishing a 61chapter on one setting unlocks the next chapter for alls settings. 62However, any given saved game will be tied to a single setting. 63 64The translation selection takes the form of a brief series of menu 65screens each time you start a game. 66 67There are two translations of Narcissu Side 2nd to choose from, and 68three of Narcissu: 69 70 Agilis (both games) -- American English 71 gp32 (Narcissu only) -- American English 72 Haeleth (both games) -- British English 73 74Each translation is based on different stylistic ideals; if summarized 75in a sentence by the translator, they would be: 76 77 Agilis -- "To stay close to the text and recreate the mental 78 experience of reading the original." 79 gp32 -- Somewhere between the two, in terms of the balance between 80 the relationship of the text and rephrasing. 81 Haeleth -- "To produce as natural an English script as possible, 82 preserving the sense but not always the exact expression." 83 84The translators may provide more details about their translation 85ideals for their version in their own notes, which you can find 86in-game under the Notes menu. 87 88Also, gp32's script for Narcissu is unchanged from the 2005 insani 89release of Narcissu, and had been included for sake of completeness. 90 91 4.2 CONTROLS 92 93 4.2.1 General controls 94 95 Action Mouse Keyboard 96 ----------------------------------------------- 97 Quit immediately Shift+Q 98 Toggle fullscreen F 99 100 4.2.2 Normal reading mode 101 102 Action Mouse Keyboard 103 ----------------------------------------------- 104 Next sentence Left click Space, Enter 105 or screen Wheel down Cursor right 106 Enter lookback Wheel up Cursor left 107 Enter menu Right click Escape 108 Adjust text speed 1, 2, 3 109 Toggle page-at-once O 110 Enter autoplay mode A 111 Skip to unread S 112 Fast forward Control 113 114 Most of these controls only work while the game is waiting for input 115 (a rotating cursor will display). While text is actually being 116 printed, only the "Next sentence" and "Fast forward" commands are 117 enabled, and "Next sentence" causes the remainder of the current 118 sentence to display immediately instead. 119 120 The text speed settings are in ascending order: 1 is very slow and 3 121 is almost instantaneous. The default is 2. 122 123 In page-at-once mode, text is printed at maximum speed, and 124 additionally the game only pauses for input at the end of each page, 125 ignoring any mid-page pauses. 126 127 Skip-to-unread mode is not instantaneous; it is equivalent to 128 fast-forwarding to the correct point. Unlike other aspects of the 129 game, each translation records what you've read separately. 130 131 Autoplay mode is described in its own section below. 132 133 4.2.3 Lookback mode 134 135 Lookback mode is a special menu-type screen used to review previous 136 pages of text. Two arrows are always displayed at the right of the 137 screen: these move back and forwards within the text. If the text 138 contains spoken lines, you can also activate those lines to play the 139 voice again. 140 141 Action Mouse Keyboard 142 ----------------------------------------------- 143 Previous screen Wheel up Cursor left 144 Next screen Wheel down Cursor right 145 Select button Cursor up/down 146 Activate Left click Enter 147 Exit lookback Right click Escape 148 149 4.2.4 Menus 150 151 Action Mouse Keyboard 152 ----------------------------------------------- 153 Select button Cursor up/down 154 Activate Left click Enter 155 Exit menu Right click Escape 156 157 4.2.5 Alternative keys 158 159 Everywhere the cursor keys are mentioned above, you can also use 160 some alternative keys. H and L are equivalent to the left and right 161 cursor keys, and K/J and P/N are both equivalent to up/down. 162 163 4.3 AUTOPLAY MODE 164 165The autoplay feature can be used to relieve the tedium of constant 166clicking. Press A at the end of a page to enable it. 167 168In autoplay mode, the game waits a variable length of time at the end 169of each chunk of text, then continues automatically. If the text has 170an associated voice clip, then the game waits for the voice to finish 171before continuing; otherwise the duration is based on the amount of 172text that has been printed. You can scale these delays in the 173configuration menu. 174 175Autoplay mode is disabled if you attempt to take any manual action. 176 177 4.4 SAVED GAMES 178 179You can save up to 20 positions in the text for later reading. To 180save a position, enter the in-game menu (right click or escape) and 181follow the prompts. 182 183Many settings are stored with each save, including the translator and 184the presence or absence of voices. 185 186Saved games are normally stored in $HOME/.Narcissu_Side_2nd; you can 187safely remove this directory if you no longer wish to keep your saves 188and settings. 189 190 4.5 CONFIGURATION 191 192The configuration screen can be accessed from the in-game menu. Most 193settings are self-explanatory. 194 195"Autoplay speed" controls the lengths of pauses in autoplay mode, 196relative to the number of characters in a page. 197 198By default, the translations include a few explanatory footnotes, and 199the opening song in Side 2nd is subtitled. If you find such things 200annoying, you can get rid of them with the Localization options. 201 202 203 5. KNOWN ISSUES 204 205 5.1 WIDESCREEN DISPLAYS 206 207Currently there is no specific support for widescreen displays. The 208game is fixed at 800x600 resolution, and you should have black bands 209down each side. 210 211If the image is distorted, please consult the documentation for your 212monitor and graphics card -- one or the other should provide a 213facility for aspect ratio correction. 214 215 5.2 FULLSCREEN MODE UNDER COMPIZ 216 217In some tests there have been intermittent problems going fullscreen 218under the Compiz window manager. The game enters fullscreen mode 219momentarily, but immediately reverts to windowed mode. 220 221This appears to be an issue with the Workarounds plugin; disabling 222that plugin makes the problem go away. (You may have to install 223something like CompizConfig Settings Manager to do this. See your 224OS's Compiz documentation.) 225 226There has also been one case where exiting the game while in 227fullscreen mode has apparently broken Compiz: all open windows went 228white, and the desktop manager crashed. We have not been able to 229reproduce this, but if it does happen to you, simply restarting Compiz 230should fix the issue without any risk of data loss. 231 232 5.3 STUTTERING SOUND 233 234There appears to be an incompatibility between some system-provided 235SDL libraries and the Ponscripter game engine that manifests itself in 236the form of horribly stuttering sound and music. We have observed 237this most frequently on Fedora. 238 239If you experience this, try recompiling Ponscripter, using the 240"--with-internal-libs" configure option to force the use of a 241compatible SDL. 242 243 244 6.
