He says: 79 80"It has been my experience that a well-managed enterprise 81monitoring system will most likely include some of both: point 82solutions to address specific network/systems issues, and a 83centralized, single pane of glass from a 'framework' system 84providing a common platform for event and problem management." 85 86Another reader said organizational issues are an important 87factor. An approach must work within the organizational and 88political structure of a company: 89 90"The approach with best of breed, plus some integration tools 91above it, is probably the less risky route - and for less 92integrated organizations, the better way to go. If you go for 93an integrated framework, you'd better be sure that you can 94handle it from an organizational viewpoint; otherwise it could 95be a hard, expensive landing." 96 97According to yet another reader, there are other factors that 98affect the decision on the management approach: 99 100"Mostly this question is answered based on: 101 102* How high up in the organization the decision is being made 103 104* How pragmatically (quick and dirty vs. big and beautiful) 105 does one want to approach the issue 106 107* How specific the requirements are 108 109* Time of decision 110 111"Each supplier has its rise and fall; the winner of today may 112be a loser tomorrow. If the different user [administrator] 113groups have a different timing regarding when they need a tool, 114they will probably come to different decisions." 115 116Another user says: 117 118"My personal favorite solution involves using vendor-supplied 119software agents such as IBM Director or Compaq Insight Manager 120and integrating them into a suite solution such as Tivoli or CA 121Unicenter. This removes not only the cost of the middleware and 122integration layers, but also removes the cost of the agent 123technology." 124 125So, there you have opinions from readers who embrace point 126products and suites working together. 127 128_______________________________________________________________ 129To contact Audrey Rasmussen: 130 131Audrey Rasmussen is a research director with Enterprise 132Management Associates in Boulder, Colorado, 133(http://www.enterprisemanagement.com), a leading analyst 134and market research firm focusing exclusively on all aspects 135of enterprise management.
