SMART also warns you if the disk 35 is about to fail, helping you avoid loss of important data.</p> 36 37 <p>Although SMART runs automatically, you can also check your disk’s 38 health by running the <app>Disks</app> application:</p> 39 40<steps> 41 <title>Check your disk’s health using the Disks application</title> 42 43 <item> 44 <p>Open <app>Disks</app> from the <gui>Activities</gui> overview.</p> 45 </item> 46 <item> 47 <p>Select the disk you want to check from the list of storage devices on 48 the left. However, it’s better 69 to be prepared with a <link xref="backup-why">backup</link> to prevent data 70 loss.</p> 71 72 <p>If the status says “Pre-fail”, the disk is still reasonably healthy but 73 signs of wear have been detected which mean it might fail in the near future. 74 If your hard disk (or computer) is a few years old, you are likely to see 75 this message on at least some of the health checks.
