1 2THE LOUT DOCUMENT FORMATTING SYSTEM 3 4Lout is a document formatting system similar in style to LaTeX. 5It offers a very full range of features, including PostScript and 6plain text output, optimal paragraph and page breaking, automatic 7hyphenation, PostScript EPS file inclusion and generation, equation 8formatting, tables, diagrams, rotation and scaling, sorted indexes, 9bibliographic databases, running headers and odd-even pages, automatic 10cross referencing, multilingual documents including hyphenation (most 11European languages are supported), formatting of computer programs, 12and more. Lout may be extended by writing definitions which are much 13simpler than the equivalent troff of TeX macros. 14 15Lout is written in highly portable ANSI C, runs on most platforms, and 16is distributed under the GNU public license. Its primary web site is 17 18 ftp://ftp.it.usyd.edu.au/jeff/lout/ 19 20Consult the README file in that directory for information about the 21latest version. 22 23Lout was created by Jeffrey H. Kingston (jeff@it.usyd.edu.au) of the 24School of Information Technologies at the University of Sydney. 25
