3The file named menu is the menu in the plain text file format. The files
4named menu.?? (?? are 2 characters, such as pt) are translations of the
5same menu. Plain text menus are preprocessed using cpp (the C Pre-Processor),
6so you can use cpp macros in it.
7
8The plmenu file is the same menu, but in the property list format.
9This menu can be edited with WPrefs.app, but since WPrefs.app does not
10support XIM, it will not allow you to make menus in languages such as
11Japanese.
12
13To use the menu in the property list format (plmenu), just replace the
14~/GNUstep/Defaults/WMRootMenu with it. To use the plain text menu,
15place the path for the menu in ~/GNUstep/Defaults/WMRootMenu, enclosed
16in double quotes ("). Ex: "~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/menu"
17
18Instructions for editing the plain text menus can be found in the menu
19file itself, kindly translated to your tongue for your convenience, by
20the translation contributors.
21
22There is a script to convert plain text menus to property list menus
23in the utils directory, named wm-oldmenu2new.
24
25If you are unsure to wich format to use, stick with the plain text menus
26as they are more flexible. If for some psychological reason you are
27scared by text based configuration, use the property list menu.

4Themes For Window Maker
5=======================
6
7Note: the information contained in this file is only valid for themes
8in the .themed (for theme directory) format, supported in
9Window Maker 0.20.4 or newer.
10
11
12How To Install a Theme Pack
13===========================
14
15To install a theme, unpack your theme into your WindowMaker directory
16(the same as old-style themes), usually ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker
17
18cd ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker
19gzip -dc "xyztheme.tar.gz" | tar xvf -
20
21You can also do this in your system-wide WindowMaker directory (usually
22/usr/local/share/WindowMaker) to have the themes be available to all
23your users. This will probably need to be done with root access.
24
25
26How To Load a Theme
27===================
28
29Use the setstyle command to load a theme. Example:
30
31setstyle xyztheme.themed
32
33Note that if you move the directory of the theme (for example, from
34~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/Themes to /usr/local/share/WindowMaker/Themes)
35you will have to reload that theme so that path information is updated.
36
37
38How To Make a Theme Pack
39========================
40
41To create a theme pack from your current configuration, use the getstyle
42utility with the -p flag. Example:
43
44getstyle -p ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/Themes/MyTheme
45
46This will create a theme pack (a new directory in either the current
47directory or a directory you specify) named MyTheme.themed, containing
48everything it requires, including all pixmap files. In this example,
49the new theme pack would be made in your themes directory and be
50immediately available in your Themes menu.
51
52Additionally, you can put a text file named MyTheme.lsm in the MyTheme.themed
53directory. This file can contain info like copyrights, credits or whatever.
54
55To distribute your theme, just make a .tar.gz of the .themed directory.
56This is preferably done from the same directory that you unpack the themes
57from to maintain consistancy with the old theme format.
58
59Example:
60
61cd ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker
62tar cvf MyTheme.tar Themes/MyTheme.themed
63gzip MyTheme.tar
64
65
66How To Delete a Theme Pack
67==========================
68
69Just remove the .themed directory. Example:
70
71cd ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/Themes
72rm -fr themename.themed
73
74
75How To Save Disk Space
76======================
77
78If you have more than 1 theme that use the same huge background image,
79you can delete all the duplicated files and then create hard links in
80place of them. For example, if you have:
81
82theme1.themed/back.jpg
83
84theme2.themed/backimage.jpg
85
86theme3.themed/back.jpg
87
88and all three files contain the same image, you can do:
89
90rm theme2.themed/backimage.jpg
91rm theme3.themed/back.jpg
92ln theme1.themed/back.jpg theme2.themed/backimage.jpg
93ln theme1.themed/back.jpg theme3.themed/back.jpg
